{"id":2874,"date":"2019-01-03T08:39:12","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T16:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dlkeur.com\/?p=2874"},"modified":"2019-01-03T08:39:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-03T16:39:12","slug":"winter-hazards-notices-from-noaa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dlkeur.com\/dlkeur-blog\/nova\/winter-hazards-notices-from-noaa\/","title":{"rendered":"Chicken Little is Hollering, and Its Name is NOAA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dlkeur.com\/dlkeur-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/IceDiamondsStrip-1024x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"168\" \/>NOAA keeps posting &#8220;Hazardous Weather Outlooks&#8221; amd &#8220;Winter Weather Advisories&#8221; for us here in North Idaho.\u00a0 Ummm.\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 I keep prepping for what that historically means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">four foot dumps of snow with rain immediately after which then collapses standard roofs;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">wind-driven snow that forms six-foot drifts, visibility zero, wind-chill down to -26\u00b0F;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">ice storms that put an inch-thick coating of frozen &#8216;slick&#8217; on everything, tearing down power lines and trees&#8230;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What are we getting?\u00a0 Yawn.\u00a0 Not even something to sneeze at.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I notice the same trend for less obscure places than Idaho, places like Cleveland, OH, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and the Beltway.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;The sky is falling, the sky is falling, we&#8217;re going to get a [normal] winter weather event.\u00a0 Driving will be reduced to <em>IMPOSSIBLE<\/em>!&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Roll my eyes.\u00a0 Ah, it&#8217;s winter, folks.\u00a0 Snow, ice, and slick driving conditions are the norm, not something to squawk like a chicken being chased by the neighbor&#8217;s dog.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">New York gets two inches of white stuff, and, suddenly, it&#8217;s grid-lock and accidents galore resulting in highway shutdowns, all of which brings commuter accusations that the highway departments didn&#8217;t do their jobs laying down &#8216;salt&#8217; (magnesium chloride in a lot of cases, which, in case you didn&#8217;t know it, is hazardous to living things and to vehicles, all).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Umm, slow down, obey the laws of physics, and don&#8217;t be a jackass?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But, no.\u00a0 Instead, we&#8217;ve got the weather people warning of coming disaster when there&#8217;s no impending disaster, at all:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">We&#8217;re not going to lose power for eight days mid-winter;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">we&#8217;re not going to be digging out from under an avalanche of white stuff;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">we&#8217;re not going to have to chain up the 4-wheel drive in order to negotiate the county road and highway;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">our roofs are will not be in danger of collapse;<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">and going outside doesn&#8217;t mean a high potential for seared lungs, frozen faces, and frostbitten toes and fingers by sub-zero temperatures coupled with strong, bitter winds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s Chicken Little hollering, is all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And why?
